Where Generations Learn to Ride

Wheaton Park Stables (WPS) is a family-oriented riding stable specializing in English style balanced-seat equitation with our primary focus in group lessons, summer camps,  trail rides and pony rides.

WPS has been in existence for close to 60 years, with 2 previous owners. (The original owner is now our Equine Dentist!) The current owner, Sandy Creecy, worked for 30+ years in a professional office, at which point she decided to make a dramatic career change at the most challenging point in her life.  She likes to point that out to the children and young adults here - “never say never, and don’t ever give up on your dream!”  She has now been operating WPS since January 2008 – with many wonderful years of enjoying horses, students, families, family pets, and our wonderful mouse control orange tabby cats, Oliver and Maisie.

WPS is a privately owned organization leasing property from the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) as a part of Wheaton Regional Park. It is located in Wheaton, Maryland, in southern Montgomery County.

Wheaton Park Stables is here for many generations to come! Thank you for your support!

In the summer of 2021, The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (the Park) proposed their Master Plan for Wheaton Regional Park for the coming 30+ yrs. Part of the discussion was/is potentially repurposing the property with which we lease. They are not sure that our 60+ yr old facility is worth investing in beyond the immediate future. We want to let them know that we are worth the investment for a myriad of reasons not just now but for future generations to enjoy, not just for those who ride, work and volunteer here but also those who visit just to see the horses, especially as our area becomes more urbanized. We strive to make horses and activities with them, accessible to more people.

Updates:

As of November 2023, our future is in a much better place. The Park has been making a number of upgrades over the past year+. Some of the projects are a new roof/gutters (most recently), new fence rails/posts, painting the front area of the barn, new siding and windows, partially replacing our waterline, among a few other projects. The County Commissioners and the Park have acknowledge what a part of the community Wheaton Park Stables has played and we hoped to stay for many more years to come.

Thank you to all who testified on our behalf at the May 19, 2022 hearing and for the letters sent in! Your overwhelming support is so awe-inspiring! We will continue to make sure our future for generations to enjoy is secure! We could not have done this withough your support. Thank you!

June 9, 2022, the Commissioners had a working meeting to discuss the Master Plan and included the future of Wheaton Park Stables. We believe we have their support for our long term future. But there is still much work to be done to secure it.

On May 5, 2022, Montgomery Parks staff presented its draft recommendations for the Wheaton Regional Park Master Plan Update to the Montgomery Planning Board. You can watch the presentation by visiting the Planning Board website.
The Staff Draft plan is available online.

At the May 5th presentation, Montgomery Parks indicated that they are investigating improvements that need to be made at the Stables for the near term (the next 5 - 6 years), but it is still unclear what the longer term future of Wheaton Park Stables will be.
It is crucial that the Planning Board and the Park know the importance of Wheaton Park Stables remaining at its current location, not just now, but for future generations.
