Our Beloved Pumpkin
We are sad to announce that our Beloved Pumpkin has passed away. While we are saddened by the loss, our hearts are filled with all of the happy thoughts and infinite amount of humorous memories that he has left behind. Pumpkin was a “living legend” at Wheaton Park Stables. He was known and loved by multiple generations of riders and horse lovers. We can’t even begin to count the number of people who have told us that they grew up riding Pumpkin and have brought their own kids back to WPS to also ride and visit the famous orange pony.
He was close to 30 years old!
Pumpkin gave hundreds (maybe even thousands) of riders all of their “firsts”. The first pony they were brave enough to pet, the first ride, the first trot/canter/jump/trail ride, along with their first buck, nip, stomped on foot, and probably even their first fall. He rarely ever gave you something you couldn’t handle or weren’t ready for but he definitely pushed many riders and handlers to their limits. He was loveable but stubborn, reliable but mischievous, friendly but often aloof when he wasn’t in the mood to visit.
Pumpkin was comfortable wherever he went. He was always the first pony into the water for a plunge at the watering hole followed by a good roll in the sand. Several hopeful riders took him to their first “off-property” horse show many years ago. Before the show began, the ponies were allowed to enter the arena to familiarize themselves with the new surroundings. While all the other ponies were fearfully inspecting the scary, decorated fences with wide-eyes and snorts, Pumpkin took the opportunity to drop and roll in soft sand footing - spoiling the hours of bathing, grooming and show prep his young riders had put in.
Pumpkin has been “retired” for quite a few years now but has roamed and ruled the property like the “king of the jungle” that he truly was. While he spent many, many years in our arenas and on our trails, he’s spent his last few years exploring areas that most of our resident equines have never seen. During his “free range” pony days, Pumpkin has visited every inch of the property including the back room in Sandy’s office, the handicapped stalls in the women’s and men’s restrooms, countless visits to the vending machine, water fountains, and the front office desk. He’s stolen many unattended treats and been shooed out of the grain room and away from chewing holes in the stored bags of grain in the front hall more times than many of us care to remember.
He will be remembered, because Pumpkin was a pony who could never, ever be forgotten and will always be loved by those who knew him best.
Please feel free to check out our Facebook page for more pictures. We’d love to hear any Pumpkin stories you may have.

Meet Our Cats
Oliver and Maisie - Joined us in 2013 - 2023
They have found a new home due to Oliver’s health. Maisie joined him as they have never been apart.
Oliver is softer, darker orange and has a white chin/chest. He is everyone’s friend, especially in the winter and you’re sitting under the heat lamps. Maisie is a bit more selective, shy, but keeps her brother in line.
Pictures coming of our newest tuxedo kittens, Beamer and Bentley, also brother and sister.
To the ones we had to say Goodbye to! Thank you!
